Skate blade profiling

Sharpening shapes the blade across its width. Profiling shapes it along its length: how much steel touches the ice at any moment, and where.

Radius and blade contact

A profile is described by radius in feet. A larger radius is flatter and puts more blade on the ice; a smaller radius rocks more and puts less.

More contact (flatter)

Stability, glide, straight-line speed.

Less contact (rockered)

Quicker turns, faster pivots, easier acceleration.

A single-radius profile applies one radius across the whole blade. A multi-radius profile joins several radii in sequence, so the heel, midfoot and toe can behave differently — a flatter middle for glide with a shorter radius at each end for agility, for example.
